7:04 P.M.

King wasn’t even pretending to follow the speed limit.

He was flying through the streets, the need to get to Faith burning through his veins. He was doing his best to remain calm for her, but he knew that she knew that he was a mess.

Someone had been in her house.

What would have happened to her if she’d come home while he was still there?

He didn’t even want to think about that.

The idea that it could have been her abductor coming back to finish what he’d started left him barely able to breathe. It was one thing to walk away from her because he thought he was doing what was best for her, leaving her free to find someone who could give her what she wanted, it was another to lose her to a psychopath.

“Charlie?”

“Yeah, angel, right here,” he said, tearing his thoughts away from the rabbit hole they were tumbling down.

“How much longer till you get here?”

He hated the fear in her voice, it made him want to rip something apart, but all he could do was press on the accelerator and pray that she wasn’t being watched. “Less than five minutes. You sure you're someplace safe?”

“Yes, I'm sure. I’m in the gas station, right beside the store. It's light, and there are plenty of people about, if he’s watching me, I don’t think he’d make a move.”

“Four minutes,” he said as he went screeching around a corner, narrowly missing a parked car.

“Sorry, I'm making you rush, I don’t want you to have an accident because of me,” Faith said, obviously having heard the screeching tires.

“Not gonna have an accident, angel,” he assured her. “I’m going to have to hang up just for these last couple of minutes, I need to make a phone call about your situation.” He hated to break the only connection he had to her, leaving her alone and vulnerable, but he had to sort something out before he got there.

“Okay,” she agreed. He could tell she didn’t like it, but she didn’t protest, just as he’d known she wouldn’t.

“I’ll be there before you know it,” he promised. As soon as he disconnected the call he sent a group text to his team, asking them to be on standby if he needed them. Then he dialed Wolf from the SEAL team that had rescued him and his team earlier in the year. “Hey, Wolf.”

“King, what’s up?” Wolf asked.

“I need a favor.” It didn’t matter that they were on different teams, they were friends, SEAL family, and he knew that if he asked, Wolf would deliver without question.

“Name it.”

“I’m bringing someone around sometime tonight, I’ll explain when I get there, but we might need the use of your basement apartment.”

“Sure thing. A woman?”

It was clear from his tone he meant was it a woman who was important to King. “It's complicated,” he said as way of an answer. “But yes, she’s in trouble, I just don’t know how badly yet.”

“See you when you get here.”

“Thanks, Wolf.” Just as he ended the call, he pulled up outside the gas station.
